This classic Reynolds 531 steel frame arrived in poor condition after decades of storage. The owner wanted a faithful restoration that would make the bike rideable while preserving its heritage. We stripped the frame completely, removed rust, and applied a professional powder coat in the original colour scheme.

Work Completed

The restoration took three weeks and involved sourcing period-correct components including Campagnolo Nuovo Record derailleurs, Brooks leather saddle, and Weinmann centre-pull brakes. We rebuilt the wheels with new spokes and rims while keeping the original Campagnolo hubs. All cables, housing, and bar tape were replaced with authentic-looking modern equivalents for reliability.

Build Process

We selected a titanium frame for its combination of strength, light weight, and natural vibration damping. The Shimano GRX groupset provides reliable 11-speed gearing with a wide range for climbing loaded. Tubeless tyres reduce puncture risk on rough surfaces. We fitted custom mudguards and a front rack system for bikepacking bags.

This downhill bike had covered two seasons of hard riding at bike parks without proper maintenance. Both the fork and rear shock were performing poorly, with reduced travel and inconsistent damping. The owner needed a complete service to restore performance before the new season.

Service Details

We performed a full strip-down of both suspension units, replacing all seals, bushings, and oil. The fork received new lower leg seals and a fresh air spring service. The rear shock needed new damper oil and rebound adjustment. After reassembly, we set sag and rebound to match the rider's weight and riding style, then tested everything thoroughly.

Project Overview

An experienced road cyclist wanted to upgrade their carbon frame bike with electronic shifting for more precise gear changes and reduced maintenance. The existing mechanical Shimano 105 groupset was still functional, but the rider wanted the benefits of Di2 technology for sportive events and training rides.

Upgrade Process

We installed a complete Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset, routing wires internally through the frame. The battery mounts in the seat tube with the junction box under the stem for easy access. We programmed the system using Shimano's E-Tube software, setting up synchronized shifting and customizing button functions. The entire system was tested over 50 miles to ensure reliability.

Restoration Approach

Rather than a full strip and repaint, we cleaned the frame carefully and touched up paint chips. Original components including the Shimano 600 groupset were serviced and adjusted. We replaced the chain, cables, brake pads, and tyres with modern equivalents that maintain the classic look. The Brooks saddle was reconditioned with proofide treatment.

Build Specification

We chose a steel frame with relaxed geometry for comfort and stability. The Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal hub needs minimal maintenance and works perfectly in wet conditions. A dynamo front hub powers integrated lights that never need charging. Full-length mudguards and a rear rack complete the practical setup. Puncture-resistant tyres reduce the chance of delays.
